The Power in Community Engagement

Every third Sunday, the Mount Vernon Seventh-day Adventist Church (MVSDA), in New York, transforms its parking lot into a hub of hope for those experiencing homelessness in Westchester County and the Bronx. In partnership with Power in a Shower LLC, the church offers more than a hot shower—it provides dignity, connection, and care to neighbors who need it most.

For over a year, this partnership has given more than 100 guests access to private, sanitary mobile showers, welcoming them into a safe and respectful environment.

“When you are clean and showered, it makes you feel good. It lifts your spirits. It makes you feel like a human being,” says Claudia Habilhomme, MVSDA Community Service Director. “This initiative allows us to reflect Christ’s love through service and action.”

The outreach goes further: church volunteers supply hot meals, groceries, clean clothing, hygiene kits, haircuts, and information on local resources.

T. Basil Sturrup, Pastor, Mount Vernon Church, sees a deeper meaning: “Because it is God’s desire to cleanse us from our sins, this ministry is a beautiful parallel—not just to physical cleansing, but spiritual as well.”

Walter Harris, founder of Power in a Shower, adds, “Anytime you lose dignity as a person, you start losing hope. We help keep people stable, connected, and moving toward normalcy.”

Recognized by local media through NEWS 12 and inspiring similar programs among other churches, this initiative proves the power of compassion in action. Community members and organizations can support through volunteering, donations, or by spreading the word—because restoring hope starts with simple acts of kindness.

Power in a Shower takes place every third Sunday, 10:00 a.m.–2:00 p.m., at Mount Vernon Seventh-day Adventist Church, 230 South Columbus Avenue, Mount Vernon, NY 10553.
