In the wake of Hurricane Melissa’s devastation across several Caribbean islands, Brittany Rhoden, Title IX Coordinator for Student Issues and Director of Student Wellness Education at Hofstra University, in Nassau County, New York, felt compelled to make a difference in her homeland of Jamaica. Inspired to give back, Rhoden partnered with colleague, Doreen Dacilas, a member of the Mid-Hudson French Seventh-day Adventist Church, to channel donations through the Northeastern Conference’s Disaster Relief efforts, organized by Adventist Youth Ministries.
Rhoden organized a campus-wide drive with the enthusiastic backing from Charese Shedrick, Associate Director of Campus Visit, Doreen Dacilas, Associate Dean of New Opportunities at the Hofstra Scholars Program, and other campus leaders.
Departments including Athletics, Student Health Services, and Orientation rallied together, resulting in the collection of approximately 45 boxes and bags filled with vital items—apparel, toiletries, food, medical supplies, diapers, feminine hygiene products, and more—for those impacted by the storm. On December 18, 2025, the relief supplies were delivered to the hurricane victims in Jamaica.
A special thank you is extended to personnel from the Northeastern Conference (NEC) who provided assistance, namely: General Gordon Jones and the Medical Cadet Corps, Michael Cuffie, Pathfinder Federation – Adventist Community Services, Dr. Paula Olivier, Adventist Youth Ministries Director along with Jonathan Coicou, Young Adult Ministries Director for their logistical support and coordination in ensuring the donations reached those in need.
Hofstra University is appreciative for the collaboration that exemplifies their spirit of community and compassion.
